Professor ABM Obaidul Islam, the current vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU), has been appointed the new vice-chancellor of the University of Dhaka.
Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon announced the decision at a press conference at the Ministry of Education on Monday.
Prof Obaidul Islam is a professor in the Department of Physics at Dhaka University. The government has decided to transfer him from BOU and appoint him as the head of the country’s premier university.
The appointment follows the resignation request of outgoing vice-chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan. According to a press release from Dhaka University’s public relations office, he submitted an application to the President on February 22 seeking relief from the post and requesting to return to his original position as a Grade-1 professor in the Department of Development Studies.
The application came after a statement he made at a special press conference on February 10 regarding his future at the university.
Niaz Ahmed Khan had taken charge as vice-chancellor of Dhaka University at the end of August 2024, shortly after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 that year, following a student-public uprising.
