Two children died after drowning in a pond at Mailmari village of Gangni upazila in Meherpur on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Yusuf Ali, 4, son of Akash Ali, and Adib Hossain, 3, son of Abbas Ali, both residents of the same village.
According to local sources, the children fell into a pond near their homes while playing. Their families, unable to find them, began searching the area and rescued the children from the pond.
The victims were taken to Gangni Upazila Health Complex for treatment where on-duty doctors declared them dead upon arrival.
Confirming the matter, Faruk Ahmed, duty doctor at the emergency department of the health complex, said that both children died before being taken to the health complex.
The hospital authorities handed over the bodies to their families, he added.
