Post-poll revenge clash kills 2, injures 30 in Brahmanbaria

A deadly wave of violence swept through Nasirnagar of Brahmanbaria on Tuesday, leaving at least two people dead and around 30 others injured, as rival groups clashed in a brutal confrontation rooted in post-election tensions.

The violence erupted around 11:00am in Goalnagar village, where armed supporters of opposing factions descended on each other with locally made sharp weapons, turning the area into a battleground within minutes, according to witnesses.

The dead were identified as Akhtar Mia and Habib Mia, who died on the spot amid the violence.

Police and local sources said the bloody clash was the culmination of simmering hostility following the 13th Parliamentary Elections.

On polling day, February 12, a supporter of one faction, Ziaur Rahman, was detained over alleged irregularities and sentenced to 10 days in jail by a mobile court – an incident that deepened divisions and triggered a series of confrontations in the days that followed.

Tuesday’s clash marked the most violent escalation yet, as both sides engaged in a pitched battle.

Witnesses described scenes of panic, with attackers chasing rivals through the village while others tried to flee to safety. Among the injured, several suffered serious injuries.

The injured were rushed to nearby facilities, including the Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex, while critically wounded victims were transferred to hospitals in Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Dr Shafiqul Islam, Resident Medical Officer at the health complex, said emergency teams were overwhelmed as casualties poured in, adding that several patients were in critical condition.

Confirming the incident, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sarail Circle) Md Jahangir Alam said additional law enforcement personnel had been deployed to contain the situation and prevent further violence.

Authorities remain on high alert amid fears of fresh clashes, as the bloody incident underscores the deep political fault lines in the area, raising fresh concerns over law and order in the aftermath of the election.
