Vocalist and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Director Asif Akbar now faces allegations of embezzling a substantial sum of money in connection with a business transaction, as a General Diary was lodged against him with Ramna Police Station.
Businessman Md Salahuddin Bhuiyan lodged the complaint with Ramna Model Police Station, claiming that Asif has failed to return the majority of a payment despite repeated requests.
According to the GD, a significant business transaction was conducted at Asif Akbar's request on 4 March 2016. A total of Tk 2.9065 crore was paid in the presence of Dr Kazi Majharul Islam and Dr Shakil Ahmed, head of the Anaesthesia department at PG Hospital.
Part of the payment was deposited into the Dutch-Bangla Bank account of Asif Akbar's wife, Salma Asif, while the remainder was handed over in cash.
Salahuddin Bhuiyan claims that Asif Akbar returned only Tk 39 lakh, leaving Tk 2.5165 crore outstanding. The GD further alleges that Asif Akbar repeatedly delayed repayment and avoided settling the remaining amount.
Concerned about his financial security, Salahuddin Bhuiyan submitted the matter to the police. The officer-in-charge at Ramna Model Police Station has received the GD and Sub-Inspectors Pradip Chandra Roy and Mohammad Rahat Khan have been assigned to oversee the legal proceedings.
Attempts to contact Asif Akbar for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication. The BCB has not yet issued an official statement regarding the complaint.
