A fire broke out on a passenger ferry shortly after it departed from Paturia ferry terminal in Manikganj on Friday evening, causing brief panic among passengers and crew.
No casualties or significant damage were reported, officials said.
The incident involved the ferry Keramat Ali, which caught fire at around 5:45 pm after completing loading operations and leaving the ghat.
Eyewitnesses said the fire started suddenly while the vessel was in motion, prompting alarm among those on board. Passengers were seen shouting and moving toward safer areas as crew members worked to contain the flames.
The ferry staff managed to bring the fire under control quickly. A team from Shibalaya Fire Service arrived at the scene and extinguished the remaining flames, bringing the situation under control.
Confirming the matter, Abdus Salam, Deputy General Manager of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), said that the fire was likely caused by a clogged silencer pipe, which can produce minor flames and black smoke.
He added that no damage or injuries were reported.
