Salahuddin hints at constitutional amendments in line with public aspirations

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has indicated that the constitution may be amended, placing top priority on public expectations and the aspirations of those who died in the student-led mass uprising.

He made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to journalists after the closing parade of the 43rd BCS (Police) batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy.

The minister said any amendment process would be carried out through consensus, based on the ‘July National Charter’ agreed upon by political parties. He added that a Constitution Reform Committee would be formed to hold detailed discussions and prepare proposals.

Responding to a question about including Ziaur Rahman as the proclaimer of independence in the constitution, Salahuddin said the issue would be reviewed by the reform committee.

“We will proceed in line with the July National Charter, giving importance to current public expectations and the ideals of the July Uprising,” he said.

According to the minister, the committee will draft recommendations focusing on key issues outlined in the charter, which he described as a document of political consensus. The final decision on any amendments will follow the constitutional process, including passage through the national parliament.

Addressing the ceremony as the chief guest, Salahuddin told the newly commissioned officers that their careers mark the beginning of a new chapter.

“This uniform is not just a symbol of authority; it stands for responsibility, sacrifice and service,” he said, urging them to serve with integrity, courage and humanity.

He also congratulated the members of the 43rd BCS (Police) batch on completing their training and wished them success in their careers.

Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir and Bangladesh Police Academy Principal (Additional IGP) GM Azizur Rahman were present at the programme.
