Minister cracks down on coaching culture at Viqarunnisa

In a dramatic move that sent ripples through Dhaka’s education circles, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has ordered students of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College to avoid coaching centres outside the school, warning that teachers will be held accountable if the practice continues.

On Monday morning, March 30, the minister summoned the acting principal of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, Majeda Begum, to his office, demanding answers as to why students were flocking to private coaching hubs.

Sources say the principal failed to provide a convincing explanation, prompting the minister’s stern rebuke.

“We want Viqarunnisa students to stop going to coaching centres. If extra help is needed, it must be provided inside the school. Any student found outside will be the responsibility of the teachers, and they will face disciplinary action,” declared Milon.

The crackdown is part of a wider government push to rein in the booming coaching industry, which critics say exploits parents and undermines schools.

Officials confirmed that similar directives are being prepared for other elite institutions nationwide, with Viqarunnisa singled out for its influence and prestige.

Habibullah Bahar College’s principal was also summoned and handed strict instructions. Attempts to reach Majeda Begum by Jago News for comment went unanswered.

This bold intervention signals the government’s intent to wrest control of education back into classrooms and could ignite fierce debate among parents, teachers, and the powerful coaching sector.
