A 13-year-old schoolgirl has died by suicide after allegedly being raped in the Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh. The victim, a local high school student, reportedly consumed pesticide following the incident on Sunday night.
According to police and family members, the teenager was allegedly assaulted by her neighbour, 36-year-old Rubel Mia. Shortly after the ordeal, the girl went to the suspect’s house and consumed pesticide.
She was initially rushed to the Phulpur Upazila Health Complex at approximately 11:00 pm. On the advice of medical staff, she was transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), where she succumbed to the poisoning early Monday morning.
"After consuming the pesticide, my granddaughter told me, 'Rubel raped me; I don't want to live anymore,'" her grandmother recounted, noting that the girl confessed to the act before her death.
The victim’s body was returned to Phulpur Police Station on Monday evening (March 30) following an autopsy at MMCH. Grief-stricken relatives gathered at the station, demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrator and swift justice.
Rashedul Hasan, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Phulpur Police Station, confirmed that the suspect, Rubel Mia, has fled the area.
"Efforts are underway to apprehend the accused," the OC stated. "We have advised the family to return to the station once the burial rituals are completed to proceed with legal formalities."
