No move yet to rename Dhaka airport, minister tells JS

The government has not yet decided to rename the capital’s main airport, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita told the Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday.

Responding to a supplementary question from BNP lawmaker Sarwar Jamal Nizam, she said any move to change the name of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport would only come after further discussions.

The MP had asked whether the government planned to restore the airport’s former name, Zia International Airport.

The country’s main airport, launched in 1980, was renamed Zia International Airport in 1983. Later, in 2010, the Awami League government changed its name to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, which remains in use.

The issue has resurfaced in recent months following political changes after August 5, 2024, with fresh calls from some quarters to revisit the airport’s name.
