Tension flares in JS as Jamaat, NCP stage fresh walkout

The Jatiya Sangsad witnessed renewed tension on Wednesday as opposition MPs from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) staged another walkout from the House, protesting what they described as disregard for their demands.

Opposition leader and Jamaat Amir Shafiqur Rahman led the walkout following a heated exchange with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed during the session.

The confrontation began when the opposition leader alleged that their concerns had not been addressed, calling it a misinterpretation of the people’s mandate.

“No remedy has been provided for our demands. This does not reflect the verdict of the country’s people,” he said, expressing frustration on the floor.

In protest, he announced a walkout along with MPs from his party and allied opposition members.

He later alleged that a separate adjournment motion had been brought forward to overshadow a specific notice raised by opposition.

As tensions escalated, the Speaker attempted to restore order, urging the opposition leader to complete his statement and assuring that their concerns would be addressed in due course.

He informed the House that another adjournment motion was pending and that the opposition would have the opportunity to speak freely after its consideration. The Speaker repeatedly requested the opposition lawmakers to wait until a decision was made on the motion.

Despite the assurances, opposition MPs remained firm in their stance and proceeded with the walkout.

Acknowledging the situation, the Speaker eventually accepted their decision, noting that such action falls within parliamentary rules, and thanked them before continuing the session.

The latest walkout marks a continuation of mounting friction between the treasury and opposition benches, signalling persistent political tension inside the parliament.
