Jamaat, allies to rally in Dhaka Saturday over July Charter implementation

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and 11 like-minded parties have announced a protest rally and procession in the capital on Saturday, demanding implementation of the July Charter.

The rally is scheduled to be held at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on April 4.

A meeting of top leaders from the 11-party alliance is also set to take place on April 7.

The announcement came from Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad following a meeting of the alliance’s liaison committee on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking at a press briefing, he alleged that the ruling party has failed to effectively run parliament and accused the government of pursuing a “fascist path” similar to that of Sheikh Hasina.

He further claimed that the government is attempting to introduce constitutional amendments as a way to sidestep meaningful reforms.

Azad said the opposition parties see no alternative but to take to the streets to press home their demands.
