A manager of sand quarry was shot and stabbed to death in a violent attack over sand business related dispute in Shibaloy upazila on Friday afternoon.
The deceased, Miraj Hossain, 35, a resident of Dapunia village in Pabna Sadar upazila, was serving as the manager of the Teota sand quarry. Another individual, Jahangir, sustained injuries in the attack.
According to police and local sources, a group of armed assailants arrived at the scene by speedboat while Miraj was working at the quarry. The attackers opened fire on him and, after he was injured, attacked him with sharp weapons before fleeing the area.
Local residents later rescued the victim in a critical condition and transported him to Manikganj Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Kawsar Alam, owner of Iftehar Enterprise, said the quarry was being operated under a government lease.
He had received death threats from an unknown number on March 1 and had filed a general diary (GD) with Shibaloy Police Station in this connection, he added.
Confirming the matter, Shibaloy Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monir Hossain said the killing is suspected to have been carried out over a dispute related to the sand business.
Police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those involved in the incident, he added.
