State Minister for Planning Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki, popularly known as Zonayed Saki, has stepped down as chief coordinator of Gano Samhati Andolan.
Dewan Abdur Rashid Nilu, a member of the party’s political council, has been appointed acting chief coordinator until the party holds a special council session.
The announcement was made at the party’s Hatirpool office in the capital on Saturday, with Saki present at the time.
Gano Samhati Andolan began its journey on August 29, 2002, with a call to build a people-based political force.
After a long legal and organisational process, it received registration from the Election Commission on September 17, 2024. The organisation formally launched itself as a political party in November 2016 through its third national representative conference.
At that conference, Saki was appointed chief coordinator, while Abdus Salam took charge as executive coordinator.
In the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election held on February 12 this year, Saki was elected as a lawmaker from Brahmanbaria-6 constituency as part of a BNP-led alliance, contesting with the party’s symbol “Mathal”.
Following the formation of the new government led by Tarique Rahman, he was appointed state minister for finance and planning. He was later relieved of the finance portfolio and retained as the state minister for planning.
