At least five people were killed in a fire at an unauthorised gas lighter factory in Keraniganj on Saturday, prompting a frantic rescue operation.
Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters media cell, said four bodies had initially been recovered from the site in the Kadamtali area.
The fire broke out around 1:00 pm at a tin-shed factory used for manufacturing gas lighters in South Keraniganj’s Kadamtali Gol Chattar area.
Seven firefighting units rushed to the scene at around 1:16 pm after receiving information and brought the blaze under control by 2:30 pm, he said.
Authorities could not immediately confirm the identities of the victims, and details about the extent of damage were still emerging.
The cause of the fire also remained unknown as firefighters continued efforts to fully douse the flames and secure the area.
