Child dies with measles symptoms in Sylhet

A four-year-old child has died with suspected measles symptoms in Sylhet while undergoing treatment at a hospital on Monday.

The child died in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital on Monday afternoon, according to the hospital’s Deputy Director, Dr Mahbubur Rahman.

He said the child had been admitted with symptoms consistent with measles and was also suffering from bronchopneumonia, a severe lung infection. The child later died of cardiac arrest.

Health officials said it would be confirmed whether the child had measles after laboratory test results become available.

Meanwhile, a report from the Sylhet Divisional Health Directorate said six new measles cases were detected in the past 24 hours. A total of 37 cases of measles and rubella have been confirmed in Sylhet division between January 1 and April 6 this year.

According to the report, the cases include six in Habiganj district, two of which are rubella infections, 10 in Moulvibazar, 11 in Sunamganj, and 10 in Sylhet.

The report also said 44 new suspected patients were admitted to hospitals across the division in the last 24 hours, with the highest number, 19 patients, admitted to Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital.
