JS passes bills renaming three medical univs

The Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday passed three bills to rename as many medical universities, with all measures approved unanimously by voice vote.

The bills are the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Sheikh Hasina Medical University, Khulna (Amendment) Bill 2026, and the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Medical University, Sylhet (Amendment) Bill 2026.

At the start of the session, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (Amendment) Bill 2026 was placed before the House and passed in its proposed form without opposition.

Subsequently, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, on behalf of the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, moved the Sheikh Hasina Medical University, Khulna (Amendment) Bill 2026, seeking to amend the 2021 Act governing the institution. With no clause-wise amendments raised, the bill was taken up for urgent consideration and passed unanimously.

Later, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain sought leave to introduce the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Medical University, Sylhet (Amendment) Bill 2026, aimed at amending the 2018 Act. Clauses 2 to 11 were adopted without changes, and the bill was subsequently passed unanimously by voice vote.
