Bangladeshi killed in BSF firing at Patgram border

A Bangladeshi citizen was killed by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) gunfire at the Patgram border in Lalmonirhat. The incident occurred early Wednesday (April 8) near border pillar 874/5-S, under the jurisdiction of Dhobolghuri BOP, part of the 61st Tista Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

The deceased, Ali Hossain, 49, son of the late Abdul Gafur, was a resident of Dhobolghuri (East Paniyartari) village in Sarkarhat Union, Patgram.

Lt. Col. Syed Fazle Munim, commanding officer of the 61st Tista Battalion, confirmed the death in a press release.

According to BGB and local sources, gunfire was heard in two consecutive rounds from the no-man’s land near border pillar 874/5-S, at around 2:50 pm on Tuesday and later at 4:50 am on Wednesday. This area falls under the jurisdiction of India’s 156th Battalion BSF Satgram Camp.

In response to the gunfire, BGB contacted the BSF by phone around 6:35 am. The BSF reportedly stated that 7–8 Bangladeshi citizens had crossed into Indian territory at dawn, allegedly attempting to cut barbed wire. BSF personnel fired warning shots, which led to a scuffle and physical confrontation with the group. During the incident, Ali Hossain was shot and later taken into BSF custody to a nearby Indian hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Lt. Col. Syed Fazle Munim said that detailed verification and information-gathering regarding the incident are ongoing. Flag meetings at the battalion and sector commander levels are being arranged to address the situation.

Earlier, on Monday (April 6), a young Bangladeshi, Md Mizanur Rahman, was injured by BSF gunfire while cutting grass. Before the effects of that incident could subside, another firing occurred early Wednesday morning.
