A member of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) was shot dead allegedly by unidentified assailants at Akbari area under sadar upazila in Khagrachhari on Wednesday morning.
The deceased, Newton Chakm, 47, son of late Sonadhan Chakma, a resident of Mogban union in Rangamati district, was an active member of the UPDF’s Prosit faction.
Amal Tripura, former central president of the UPDF-backed Pahari Chhatra Parishad, said that Newton Chakma was staying in the area with an associate when a group of armed attackers suddenly opened fire on them before fleeing the scene.
His companion managed to escape unharmed, but Newton Chakma died on the spot after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, he said.
Confirming the matter, Khagrachhari Police Station officer-in-charge Kai Kislu said that a team of police reached the scene after being informed of the incident and recovered the body from there.
The body was later sent to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination, he said, adding that further legal proceedings are underway in this connection.
Police are trying to arrest the accused involved in the incident and legal action will be taken against them, the OC said.
