Internet disruption likely for 3 nights for submarine cable maintenance

Internet users across Bangladesh may experience temporary disruptions and slower speeds for three nights starting April 9, due to scheduled maintenance work on a submarine cable system.

In a press release issued Wednesday, Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC said internet services could be affected for around eight hours each night, from 10:00pm to 6:00am, between April 9 and April 13.

The maintenance work is being carried out by the consortium managing the country’s second submarine cable, the SEA-ME-WE-5 system, which is connected to Kuakata.

According to the release, the activity – titled “S.1.5.1 Shunt Fault Repair” – will involve technical work that may temporarily affect data traffic routed to Singapore via the SEA-ME-WE-5 system.

As a result, users may face slow internet speeds or partial service interruptions during the maintenance window.

However, BSCPLC said internet services through the country’s other submarine cable systems will remain operational, helping to minimise the overall impact.

The company added that it is coordinating closely with the international consortium to complete the work as quickly and smoothly as possible, with efforts in place to restore normal service within the scheduled timeframe.
