Former MP Safura Begum Rumi arrested

The Detective Branch (DB) of Lalmonirhat Police has arrested Safura Begum Rumi, former member of parliament from a reserved seat for women representing the Awami League, whose activities remain banned.

According to district police sources, under the overall guidance of Lalmonirhat Superintendent of Police, a special DB team conducted an operation using information technology on Wednesday night (April 8) in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka and apprehended her.

Safura Begum Rumi hails from Taluk Khutamara (Ukilpara) in Sadar Upazila of Lalmonirhat. She is a member of the Awami League Central Executive Committee, president of Lalmonirhat District Women’s League, and former president of the Lalmonirhat Bar Association. She also served as a member of parliament from the reserved women’s seat-2 (Lalmonirhat-Kurigram).

The police said she is accused in several serious criminal cases across the country, including murder, sabotage, fraud, riots, extortion, and arson. Notable cases include a murder case under Kotwali Police Station of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, multiple cases under Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station for breaching law and order and penal code violations, and a murder case under Mohammadpur Police Station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Sources stated that since August 5, 2024, she had left Lalmonirhat and was in hiding in Dhaka, from where she allegedly coordinated various activities.

Lalmonirhat Superintendent of Police Md Asaduzzaman confirmed the arrest in a press release, adding that legal action against the accused is currently underway.
