A Bangladeshi national was shot dead by members of the Khasi community while attempting to illegally enter India through the Companiganj border area in Sylhet.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 pm on Thursday (April 9).
The matter was confirmed on Friday (April 10) by Lt Col Md Nazmul Haque, Commanding Officer of BGB-48.
The deceased was identified as Saleh Ahmed Joydhar (30), a resident of Karbala Tukur village near Dayar Bazar in Companiganj.
According to a press release issued by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), three youths from the Dayar Bazar area—Saleh Ahmed Joydhar, Suman Mia, and Masum Ahmed—illegally entered Indian territory with the intention of bringing in a consignment of drugs. They took position near border areas adjacent to Chongket and Markan gardens.
While they were inside a betel nut garden owned by the Khasi community, local Khasi residents in India, suspecting them to be thieves, opened fire. Saleh Ahmed was hit by bullets and died on the spot.
The two others who were with him later brought his body back to Bangladesh.
