Keraniganj youth lands in jail over attack on JnU teacher

A Dhaka court has sent a young man to jail in connection with an attack on a Jagannath University (JnU) teacher and his father following a dispute over alleged drug use in Keraniganj.

The accused was identified as Ehsanur Haque Mahim, 22, a resident of Keraniganj in Dhaka.

Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Tanvir Ahmed on Friday, April 10, ordered the detention of Mahim, and set Sunday, April 12, for the next hearing.

Court sources said police arrested Mahim shortly after the incident and produced him before the court. After the hearing, the court rejected his bail plea and ordered him to be sent to jail.

The incident took place on Thursday night, April 9 in the Madaripur Road-2 area of Kalindi Union under Keraniganj Model Police Station.

According to the case statement, the accused had allegedly been loitering and engaging in drug use and group gathering in front of the residence of Jagannath University Associate Professor Md Raisul Islam.

When Nazrul Islam, the father of the professor, objected to his behavior, the accused allegedly became aggressive, verbally abused him, and assaulted him physically. He reportedly pushed him to the ground, beat him with fists and kicks, and later attempted to strike him with an iron rod, which caused a serious injury below his eye.

The complaint also alleges that Tk 6,000 was taken from the victim during the incident.

Locals intervened and overpowered the accused before handing him over to police.

A case was later filed in connection with the incident, said Dhaka Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman.

Police were looking into the matter seriously, the SP said, adding that legal proceedings were underway.

Following the attack, students of the Mass Communication and Journalism Department of JnU staged protests demanding swift legal action and exemplary punishment for the accused.
