Child dies with measles symptoms in Shariatpur

A 10-month-old child has died after being admitted to hospital with measles-like symptoms during the past 24 hours in sadar upazila of Shariatpur.

The deceased was identified as Zahid, son of Zainal Mia, a residnt of Angaria area in the upazila.

Confirming the matter, Shariatpur Sadar Hospital Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Mitu Akter said that the infant had been admitted on April 8 with high fever, cough and other symptoms consistent with measles. 

He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital in the early hours of Wednesday, she said.

Civil Surgeon Dr Rehan Uddin said the child’s sample had been sent to Dhaka for laboratory confirmation of measles infection, but the result was not available before his death.

Health officials said a growing number of patients with measles symptoms have been reported in the district in recent days. A total of 167 people have so far sought treatment, of whom 42 have recovered, while 69 remain under treatment.

Nine new patients were reported in the past 24 hours, officials added.

Currently, 20 patients are admitted to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, where a dedicated isolation unit has been set up for measles cases.
