Critics are young, maturity will show them their mistakes: Army Chief
Chief of Army Staff General Waker-uz-Zaman on Tuesday called on the service members not to disheartened by negative comments directed at the army.
“We should not be disheartened by negative comments,” he said. “Many of those criticising are young – around the age of our children. With time and maturity, they will understand the truth and reflect on their words,” said General Waker adopting a measured tone.
Speaking at an Officers' Address programme held at Dhaka Cantonment on Tuesday, August 19, the Army Chief came up with the remark emphasising the military’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, and national unity during this sensitive period.
He iterated that the army remains a professional institution and must carry out its duties without bias or vindictiveness. “We are not here to settle scores. Our loyalty is to the Constitution and the nation. We will not allow personal or political agendas to undermine our professionalism.”
On allegations of misconduct, General Waker-uz-Zaman confirmed that investigations are underway into two high-profile cases – one involving alleged political involvement by an army officer, and another concerning accusations of torture.
“There will be no cover-up,” he stressed. “If evidence is found, strict action will be taken. However, punishment will not come from media trials. Justice must be fair, transparent, and based on facts.”
He also highlighted the importance of preventive measures, noting that significant public funds are invested in training and developing army officers. “It is far better to correct course before a lapse occurs than to dismiss someone after a scandal. That would be a waste of national resources and human potential.”
The Army Chief issued a strong warning against the spread of fake news and disinformation aimed at tarnishing the image of the armed forces. “Misleading narratives are being circulated deliberately,” he said. “Service members and the public alike must remain vigilant. Do not be misled by manipulated content designed to erode trust in the institution.”
In a heartfelt message to officers and troops, General Waker-uz-Zaman reminded them of their role as custodians of national integrity. “The people of Bangladesh are watching us. You are not just soldiers – you are the future leaders of this country. Let patriotism be your compass, and let the chain of command remain unbroken.”
