Teachers’ march to Secretariat faces police obstruction
The police obstructed teachers from private MPO-affiliated educational institutions from marching towards the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon, October 14.
They faced obstruction when reached near the High Court from the Central Shaheed Minar around 4:15pm.
Alleging that the Finance, and Education ministries started dilly-dallying to accept their rational demands, the protesting teachers vowed to march towards the Secretariat, and will besiege the Secretariat to press home their demands, if necessary.
As previously announced, the march was initially scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm but it was deferred for several hours after the National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdulllah urged the teachers not to march towards the Secretariat.
However, the teachers gave the government an ultimatum till 3:00pm to meet their demands, and announced march to Secretariat at 4:00pm if their demands are not met.
MPO-listed teachers of non-government educational institutions across the country launched an indefinite work stoppage on Monday, October 13, to demand a 20% hike in house rent allowance based on basic salary and to protest attacks on their programmes by police.
