Ministry to remove Dr Din Mohammad from Neuroscience Hospital

Professor Dr Kazi Din Mohammad, the director of the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka, is being removed following a heated dispute and subsequent protests by hospital staff.

Sources from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the hospital have confirmed the development.

The controversy began on Wednesday (February 12) morning when Dr Kazi Din Mohammad locked in altercation with other doctors over the joining of neuromedicine specialist Associate Professor Dr Gurudas Mondal. During the argument, outsourcing workers allegedly attacked the doctors on the director’s behalf, leaving two doctors injured. In response, the hospital’s doctors announced a suspension of regular surgeries, though emergency and outpatient services remained operational.

As of Thursday (February 13), the doctors’ protest continued, with threats of escalating their agitation if Dr Kazi Din Mohammad and Joint Director Badrul Alam were not removed.

Sources from the Health Ministry revealed that a meeting was held on Wednesday to address the unrest, resulting in a decision to terminate the director’s contractual appointment. The file for his removal has been sent from the Health Ministry to the Public Administration Ministry for final approval.

Dr Jalal Uddin Rumi, General Secretary of the Neuroscience Branch of the Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB), told Jago News that they had received similar information about the director’s removal. "If the director is removed, we will withdraw our protest. If not, we will hold a press conference today or Sunday and announce a larger programme," he said.

Another source confirmed that Dr Kazi Din Mohammad submitted his resignation to the Health Adviser on Wednesday. Attempts to reach Din Mohammad for comment were unsuccessful, and he was seen attending his office on Thursday.

Dr Kazi Din Mohammad, the founding director of the hospital, has held the position for over 10 years on a contractual basis.
