Auto-rickshaw drivers block roads in Dhaka, halting traffic

CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers in Dhaka have blocked several roads in protest against a directive that mandates filing cases and imposing fines for charging fares higher than the meter rate. As a result, commuters have faced severe traffic congestion on their way to work.

The roadblock began around 8:00 am on Sunday (February 16), causing the suspension of traffic from Badda to Rampura and from Rampura to Kuril.

Since the morning, traffic movement has also been halted on two major entry points to Dhaka, Jatrabari and Gabtali. The roadblock on the first working day of the week has led to significant congestion on various roads, causing considerable inconvenience for commuters.

The protesting CNG drivers are demanding the cancellation of the new regulations and an end to police harassment. They have announced that they will continue the roadblock until their demands are met.

The drivers argue that due to the arbitrary actions of vehicle owners, extortion on the streets, and illegal money collection in the name of stands, they are unable to operate their auto-rickshaws in line with government guidelines. They claim they are forced to drive without meters due to heavy pressure from owners, who require them to pay Tk 950 per shift, and Tk 900 during night shifts, to be handed over by 6:00 am.
