Riaz Hamidullah finally presents credentials to Droupadi Murmu
Bangladesh’s newly appointed High Commissioner to India, M Riaz Hamidullah, presented his credentials to Indian President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Thursday, May 29.
The event was originally scheduled for May 15 but postponed at the last moment.
Welcoming High Commissioner Hamidullah, President Murmu articulated a vision for a “democratic, stable, prosperous, and inclusive” Bangladesh, emphasizing the enduring foundation of bilateral ties rooted in the shared sacrifices of the 1971 Liberation War. She underscored the importance of enhanced connectivity and a joint commitment to prosperity, reflecting the deep bonds that unite India and Bangladesh.
The ceremony saw President Murmu accept credentials from envoys of Thailand, Costa Rica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Turkiye, Bangladesh, and Kazakhstan, a testament to India’s growing diplomatic engagements. Murmu also congratulated Bangladesh on assuming the chairmanship of BIMSTEC for a two-year term, recognising its leadership in fostering regional cooperation.
High Commissioner Hamidullah, who assumed his role in New Delhi on April 14, 2025—coinciding with the Bangla New Year—conveyed warm greetings from the President and people of Bangladesh. A senior career diplomat from the 15th batch (1995) of Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs), Hamidullah expressed his commitment to strengthening the dynamic partnership between the two nations. He highlighted the importance of fostering connections between the youth of India and Bangladesh, noting their significance as the largest demographic segments in both countries.
Hamidullah’s diplomatic journey is marked by extensive experience. Before this posting, he served as Secretary (West & Multilateral) at Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, and Ambassador to the Netherlands. His past roles include stints at the Bangladesh Mission in New Delhi, the Permanent Mission in New York, and the SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu, alongside handling multilateral economic issues, South Asian, and European affairs at the ministry headquarters.
