Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has announced that a decision has been made to remove party symbols from local government elections.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, the adviser stated, “Party symbols will no longer be used in local government elections. At today’s Advisory Council meeting, amendments to four related laws, proposed by the Local Government Division, were approved.”

In 2015, the Local Government Act was amended to include a provision allowing candidates for the chairman post to run with party symbols. In 2017, local government elections were held for the first time using party symbols.
