Offered other role, but actor traces him in Jamaat campaign ad
Actor Sohel Towfiq has alleged that he was unknowingly featured in a political campaign advertisement after initially agreeing to work on what he says was presented to him as a promotional video for a social complaint-based mobile application.
The actor made the claim in a statement posted on his Facebook account, saying the final broadcast included an election message linked to Jamaat-e-Islami’s “scale” symbol without his consent.
Sohel, widely recognised for his role in the long-running megaserial Mashrafi Junior and several film projects, said he felt “cheated” after the advertisement aired publicly.
According to him, the project was described as a platform encouraging citizens to report injustice, corruption, extortion and harassment.
“I had agreed to act in an advertisement for a social complaint-taking app,” he wrote. “But later, without my knowledge and consent, a political vote call was attached at the end of the advertisement.”
The actor further claimed that at no stage of the production process, including pre-shoot discussions, filming, or post-production, was he informed that the content would be used as part of any election campaign.
He stressed that the development goes against his professional ethics and personal stance.
“This matter is completely outside my ethical position and professional commitment,” Sohel added in the statement, clarifying that he has no affiliation with any political party, symbol or electoral promotion.
The controversy has sparked discussion across the entertainment industry and social media, where many artists have raised concerns over the use of performers’ images in politically sensitive material without clear disclosure.
Industry insiders say the incident highlights the growing overlap between digital marketing, political messaging and celebrity endorsements during the election season.
Neither the producers of the advertisement nor representatives of the political party mentioned in Sohel’s post have publicly responded to the allegations as of Saturday evening.
