Fishermen in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, are hauling in large quantities of Hilsa, with individual fish weighing between 1.5 and 2 kilograms, sold at Tk 1,800–2,000 per kilogram.

The surge in catches follows adherence to government-imposed fishing restrictions in Bay of Bengal, according to local fishermen and officials.

Ali Johar, a fisherman on a trawler operating near Shahparir Dwip, told Jago News, “Complying with the government’s Hilsa fishing bans was challenging, as we struggled to meet family expenses without fishing. However, following these restrictions has led to larger Hilsa being caught now.”

He expressed optimism about even bigger catches in the future, despite stormy weather and rains, noting that other species like large yellow croaker and sea rita are also abundant.

Abdul Mannan, a boatman for Siraj Company’s fishing trawler at Shahparir Island, reported returning to the island’s ghat on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, after a successful trip.

“Hilsa are being caught in large numbers. We brought back five maunds of fish, one-third of which were Hilsa,” he said.

Teknaf Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Delwar Hossain attributed the increase in large Hilsa catches to compliance with government restrictions, benefiting both fishermen and trawler owners.

The sustainable practices are yielding positive results for the local fishing community.

In early July, prices of hilsa soared to the highest of year transforming from a staple on family dining tables into a luxury item.

With supply dwindling in the market and fishermen unable to venture out to sea due to adverse weather conditions, Hilsa had become a "dream fish" for many—longed for but out of reach.

Prices rose to Tk 1,600/kg for 400–450 gram sized fish, Tk 1,800/kg for 500–600 gram size, Tk 2,100/kg for 600–800 gram size, Tk 2,300/kg for 800–900 gram size, and up to Tk 2,500/kg for 900–1,000 gram sized hilsa.
