25 RMG workers, 15 cops hurt in Ctg clash

At least 40 people including 15 police personnel were injured in a pitch battle between police and readymade garments workers at New Market intersection area in the port city on Wednesday morning.

Witnesses said workers Asian Apparels, readymade garments at New Market area blocked the road in protesting of beating Monju, one of their co-workers around 10am and started to stage their demo.

Being informed police rushed in and tried to move them from the area forcefully. As the law enforcers failed to move them from the road they started baton charge on the workers, leaving at least 25 workers, most of them are female injured, triggered a pitch battle.

Both the groups fought a pitched battle chasing each other. During the melee, a brick chip was hurled form one side that leaving 15 police men including AC, OC and female members.

Later, police opened blank fire and fired tear gas on the workers to disarray them around 12pm.

In this time, police also arrested at least 100 female workers from the area.

Jasim Uddin, officer-in charge of Sadar Police Station said injured were taken to hospital.

Abdus Salam, owner of Asian Apparels alleged that two group of workers engaged into clash in the area over establishing supremacy and blocked the road. Later police disperse workers and bring the situation under control.
