6.9 magnitude quake could kill over 200,000 in Dhaka: RAJUK
A survey conducted by the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) has warned that a 6.9-magnitude earthquake along the Madhupur fault in Tangail could cause 40% of buildings in Dhaka to collapse, potentially killing more than 200,000 people.
The findings were presented on Monday (24 November) at a seminar and discussion titled “Preparedness and Measures to Reduce Earthquake Risks,” held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Ramna, Dhaka. The seminar was organised by RAJUK following four tremors that shook the city on Friday and Saturday.
The event was attended by two advisers, RAJUK’s chairman, representatives of emergency service agencies, professional organisations, and experts in earthquake and disaster management.
Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan called for an urgent risk assessment of Dhaka’s buildings, emphasising the need for a third-party evaluation to ensure transparency. She stressed that immediate action is necessary and urged RAJUK and the city corporation to take strict measures. “Where demolition is required, no leniency should be shown. This is crucial,” she said, suggesting that RAJUK be granted special powers if needed.
Industrial Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan said amendments to the Town Improvement Act are underway to strengthen RAJUK’s authority, which are expected to be finalised soon.
