A woman in Ishwardi, Pabna, has been arrested and sent to jail for killing eight newborn puppies by stuffing them into a sack and dumping them into a pond.

The accused, Nishi Rahman, 38, was produced before Pabna Cognizance Court-2 on Wednesday afternoon. After the hearing, Judge Tariqul Islam ordered her to be sent to jail.

The case was filed late Tuesday night by Ishwardi Upazila Livestock Officer Aklima Khatun, following widespread outrage after the incident went viral on social media.

Police arrested Nishi from a rented house in Ishwardi Municipality around 1:30am.

Nishi is the wife of Hasanur Rahman Nayan, an officer of the Small Farmers Development Foundation under the Rural Development and Cooperatives Department.

Ishwardi Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Pranab Kumar said, “After the video spread on social media, a case was filed and the accused was arrested. She was later produced before the court. During initial questioning, Nishi claimed she put the puppies in a sack out of annoyance at their cries but denied throwing them into the pond. We are investigating further.”

According to locals, a dog named Tom had been living near the Ishwardi Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s residence for a long time and gave birth to eight puppies a week ago.

On Monday morning, the mother dog was seen frantically searching for her missing litter.

Later, employees of the Upazila Parishad learned that the puppies had been stuffed into a sack and dumped in the nearby pond on Sunday night.

Their bodies were recovered the following morning.

Ishwardi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Moniruzzaman said the family was ordered in writing to vacate the government quarters following the incident. They left the residence on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said further action will be taken after a full investigation.
