Youth sentenced to death for killing cop in Rangpur

A Rangpur court on Monday sentenced a young man to death in a case over the killing of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in 2021.

The convict was identified as Parvez Rahman Polash, 30, son of Jahidul Islam, a resident of Baharkachna Telipara area of Rangpur city.

Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Judge Marzia Khatun delivered the verdict for the murder of ASI Piarul Islam of Haragach Police Station under Rangpur Metropolitan Police.

The court also sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment under two additional charges.

According to court proceedings, the judgment was handed down after examination of testimony from 18 witnesses and final arguments from both prosecution and defense lawyers.

Case documents state that Polash was arrested on September 24, 2021, from the Cigarette Company Mor area in Haragach on allegations of involvement in drug use and trafficking.

During the arrest, he allegedly stabbed ASI Piarul Islam with a knife. The injured officer was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he died the following morning while undergoing treatment. 

Police later filed separate cases against him under murder and narcotics laws.
