Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), met with Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, amid growing speculation about the latter’s possible resignation.

The meeting took place on Thursday (May 22) evening at the Chief Adviser’s official residence, the state guest house Jamuna.

Confirming the meeting to BBC Bangla, Nahid said, “Given the current situation in the country and the reports we've been hearing since this morning about Sir's possible resignation, I went to speak with him about these developments.”

According to Nahid, the Chief Adviser expressed concerns about his ability to continue in office under the prevailing circumstances.

“He said, ‘If I cannot work… I was brought here following a mass uprising, with the aim of bringing change and reform to the country. But in the current situation—with the way the movement is progressing and the way I’m being held hostage—this is not a way I can function,’” Nahid told BBC Bangla.

Nahid urged the Chief Adviser not to make any decision regarding resignation at this critical stage. He said, “Considering the aspirations of our mass uprising, national security, and the future of the country, we urged him to remain strong and to keep all parties united. We hope everyone will cooperate with him.”

He further stated that the Chief Adviser is indeed contemplating resignation. “Yes, he said if he cannot work, then what is the point of staying?” Nahid added.

Following the discussion, the Chief Adviser reportedly told Nahid that he is "thinking about resignation" and feels the current situation may prevent him from continuing.

Commenting on the Chief Adviser’s current position, Nahid said, “If the political parties want him to step down... if he doesn’t receive the necessary trust or assurance, then why should he stay?”

Meanwhile, the BNP on Wednesday demanded the resignation or removal of two advisers and the National Security Adviser of the interim government. As part of its ongoing movement to swear in BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, the party called for the resignation of advisers Mahfuj Alam and Asif Mahmud.

Later, at a press conference, BNP also demanded the resignation of National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman.

In response, a senior leader of the NCP warned that three advisers of the interim government—accused of being "spokespersons for BNP"—could be forced to resign if the proposed reforms are not implemented.
