Hafizur Rahman Sohan, the central vice-president of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), was detained for allegedly staying on campus illegally during the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) elections.

Sohan, a former student of the English Department of the university, was apprehended on Thursday (11 September) around 11:00 am from a room in Rabindranath Tagore Hall.

When asked about his presence in the residential hall during the elections, Sohan said he had come to campus on Wednesday night and, feeling unwell, went to the hall to rest. He admitted that he did not obtain permission from the authorities to stay there.

After his detention, Sohan was handed over to the university’s proctorial body. The provost of the hall, Professor Shafiqul Islam, said, “Staying in the residential hall during the election by a former student violates the university’s code of conduct. That is why we handed him over to the proctorial team.”

Professor A K M Rashidul Alam, the university’s Proctor, added, “We sent security guards to bring him. Appropriate action will be taken against him according to the rules.”
