Jamaat secures six in Dhaka’s 20-seat battle
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured a majority in the 13th national parliamentary elections held on Thursday (12 February). Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance won more than 70 seats nationwide. Of the 20 constituencies in Dhaka, lone Jamaat candidates won six seats.
The results were announced at the Divisional Commissioner’s Office in Segunbagicha in the capital by Dhaka Divisional Commissioner and Returning Officer Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury on Friday (13 February).
In Dhaka-4, Jamaat candidate Zainul Abedin was declared elected, winning by a margin of nearly 3,000 votes. He secured 77,367 votes, while his nearest rival, BNP candidate Tanvir Ahmed, received 74,447 votes.
In Dhaka-5, Jamaat candidate Mohammad Kamal Hossain received 96,641 votes, while his nearest rival, BNP candidate Md Nabi Ullah, secured 87,491 votes, resulting in a victory margin of 9,150 votes.
In Dhaka-12, a key constituency in the capital, Jamaat candidate Saiful Alam won by a margin of 22,180 votes, securing 53,773 votes. His nearest rival, a BNP-led alliance candidate and General Secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh, received 30,963 votes.
In Dhaka-14, Jamaat candidate Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem was elected with 101,113 votes, while his nearest rival, BNP candidate Sanzida Islam, received 83,323 votes.
In Dhaka-15, Jamaat Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman won the seat with 85,131 votes, while his BNP rival, Md Shafiqul Islam Khan, secured 63,517 votes — a margin of 21,614 votes.
In Dhaka-16, Jamaat candidate Abdul Baten won the seat with 88,828 votes, while his nearest rival, BNP candidate Aminul Haque, received 85,467 votes.
