Keya Group shuts down 2 more factories

Twenty-one days after Keya Group announced the closure of four factories, the authorities have declared that two more of its factories will be permanently shut down starting May 20. This decision will lead to over 10,000 workers losing their jobs across six factories, with a significant portion of these workers reported to be speech and hearing impaired.

Sabina Yasmin, the Manager of the Human Resources Department at Keya Group, confirmed the factory closures.

The two factories set to permanently close from May 1 are Keya Cosmetics Limited (Knit Composite Garments Division, Knitting Division, Spinning Division, Cotton Division) and Keya Yarn Mills Limited, located in Zarun, Konabari, Gazipur.

A notice issued on Tuesday stated that, in accordance with labour law regulations, all dues for workers, officers, and employees will be settled within 30 working days after the factories close.

The notice cited reasons for the permanent closure, including current market instability, discrepancies in bank accounts, shortages of raw materials, and inadequacies in the factory’s production activities.

The notice was signed by the Director, Managing Director, and Chairman of Keya Cosmetics Limited (Knit Composite Division) and was posted on the factory’s main gate on Tuesday afternoon.

Sabina Yasmin, the HR Manager, mentioned that over 10,000 workers are employed at Keya Group, including a large number of speech and hearing-impaired individuals. "We are deeply concerned about them," she said.

She further stated that if the government addresses the situation and creates a favorable environment, the factories could reopen in the future.

Earlier, on January 2, Keya Group had announced the permanent closure of four factories, which are set to shut down on May 1.
