Expats send Tk 20,447cr in 25 days

In the first 25 days of January, Bangladeshis living abroad sent a total of $167,59,70,000 in remittances which in local currency amounts to Tk 20,447 crore (based on an exchange rate of 122 taka per dollar).

This means an average of over Tk 818 crore is being sent daily. If this trend continues, remittances are expected to exceed two billion dollars this month, marking the seventh consecutive month of over two billion dollars in remittances for the current fiscal year. This information was shared by Bangladesh Bank sources.

According to the central bank, during the 25-day period, remittances worth $167,59,70,000 were received. Of this, $ 35,42,80,000 came through government banks, $7,43,70,00 through one of the specialised banks (Krishi Bank), and $124,25,30,000 through private banks. Foreign banks accounted for about 4.8 million dollars in remittances.

In December, Bangladesh received the highest-ever monthly remittance of $2.64 billion, amounting to more than Tk 31,668 crore. This was the largest remittance inflow in a single month, surpassing the previous record of $2.59 billion dollars in July 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic.

For the first half of the 2024-25 fiscal year (July-December), expatriate Bangladeshis sent a total of $1,377.7 million in remittances, which is an increase of $2.977 million compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. During the first half of the last fiscal year (July-December), remittances amounted to $1,800 million.
