Rice prices to be tolerable soon, assures Sk Bashir
Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin has expressed optimism that rice prices will soon become more affordable as the rice of Boro season is set to hit the market within the next two weeks.
He made these remarks during a press briefing at the ministry on Tuesday (April 15), following a meeting to review key issues, including the import and supply of edible oil.
"Unfortunately, rice prices have been rising for some time," Bashir Uddin acknowledged. "However, with the arrival of new rice of Boro season in the market, we expect the situation to improve significantly."
He explained that fine rice varieties such as Nazirshail and Miniket, which are primarily sourced from the Boro season, will soon be available. This year, favourable weather conditions, uninterrupted electricity supply, and adequate fertilizer availability have created an ideal environment for a successful harvest.
"We believe that, by the grace of God, our crops – especially rice –will be blessed this year," he added. "Once the new rice enters the market, prices will stabilise, and the situation will become more bearable for consumers."
The Commerce Adviser also highlighted the dynamic nature of agricultural products and assured the public that the government is closely monitoring all essential commodities.
"We are keeping a sharp eye on the market and taking necessary steps to manage price fluctuations effectively," he said.
When asked whether discussions on trade between Bangladesh and the US would take place during the upcoming visit of Trump's delegation, Bashir Uddin emphasised its importance.
"This is the key issue that will dominate the agenda," he noted.
As Bangladesh prepares for the arrival of the US delegation, the government remains committed to addressing domestic challenges, particularly rising food prices, while fostering stronger international trade relations.
