Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has mandated the formation of a high-level committee to ensure fair pricing for sacrificial animal hides, streamline transportation, and enhance waste management during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

The directive was issued during a meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna on Sunday, May 4, as part of efforts to protect vulnerable communities and break the grip of syndicates manipulating the rawhide market.

“For too long, people – especially the poorest who depend on rawhide sales – have been cheated out of fair prices,” Yunus declared. “This injustice must end.”

He accused syndicates of artificially suppressing prices, depriving marginalised groups of critical income. The committee, led by Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin, will tackle these issues head-on.

Yunus emphasised humane treatment during animal transportation and market sales, urging strict enforcement against cruelty.

He also called for proper use of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) in hide processing to minimise environmental harm.

The committee includes key figures like Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhtar, Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Road Transport Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam, Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and representatives from religious institutions and leather traders.

The meeting, chaired by Yunus, saw robust discussions on ensuring a transparent and equitable rawhide market, reflecting the government’s commitment to economic justice and sustainable practices during Eid-ul-Azha.
