Bangladesh makes history with T20 series win over Pakistan
Bangladesh clinched a historic T20 series victory against Pakistan, defeating them by 8 runs in a thrilling second T20I at Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
This marks the first time Bangladesh has won a T20 series against Pakistan and their fourth consecutive T20I victory, a national record.
Batting first after losing the toss, Bangladesh were bowled out for 133 in 20 overs. Pakistan, chasing 134, were dismissed for 125 in 19.2 overs, falling short in a tense finish.
Bangladesh’s innings started poorly, slumping to 28/4 in the power play.
Opener Naim Sheikh (3 off 7) was caught behind off Fahim Ashraf, followed by captain Liton Das (8 off 9) and Towhid Hridoy (0) falling to poor shots and a run-out. Parvez Hossain Emon (13 off 14) was dismissed in the sixth over, leaving the Tigers reeling.
A 53-run partnership between Sheikh Mehedi (33 off 25, 2 fours, 1 six) and Zaker Ali steadied the innings. Zaker anchored the innings with a composed 55 off 48 balls (1 four, 5 sixes), including a six to reach his fifty, guiding Bangladesh to 133 before being dismissed on the final ball. For Pakistan, Salman Mirza, Ahmed Daniel, and Abbas Afridi took two wickets each.
Pakistan’s chase began disastrously, losing Saim Ayub (1) to a brilliant run-out by Liton Das off Rishad Hossain’s throw in the first over. Mohammad Haris (0) was trapped LBW by Shariful Islam in the next over, followed by Fakhar Zaman (8) caught by Liton off Shariful. Tanjim Hasan Shakib dismissed Hasan Nawaz and Mohammad Nawaz (both 0) with consecutive bouncers, leaving Pakistan at 15/5.
Captain Salman Agha (23 off 23) and Fahim Ashraf (51 off 32, 4 fours, 4 sixes) fought back, with Fahim nearly turning the game with four sixes, including one off Rishad Hossain. Needing 13 runs off the final over bowled by Mustafizur Rahman, Ahmed Daniel hit a four and a six, but Shamim Patwary’s catch at midwicket dismissed him, sealing Bangladesh’s victory. Shariful Islam (3/17), Sheikh Mehedi (2 wickets), and Tanjim Hasan Shakib (2 wickets) led the bowling attack.
This victory follows Bangladesh’s recent T20 series win in Sri Lanka, marking their emergence as a formidable T20 side.
