BB to release new Tk 20, 50, 1,000 notes before Eid
Bangladesh Bank traditionally releases new banknotes ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha. In addition to the festive season, new notes are also supplied throughout the year based on the demand from commercial banks. However, ahead of the last Eid-ul-Fitr, the central bank did not release new notes due to the inclusion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait on the currency.
Ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, Bangladesh Bank is preparing to release new design notes in Tk 20, Tk 50, and Tk 1,000 denominations. The Security Printing Corporation (TSPC) in Gazipur has already begun printing the new notes. These will not feature the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Instead, they will include the July Uprising graffiti and return to earlier designs.
Executive Director and Spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank, Arif Hossain Khan, confirmed that the new design notes will be available in the market before Eid. All necessary preparations are underway, and the printing process is nearing completion. However, he did not specify the exact release dates for the different denominations.
Another senior official of Bangladesh Bank stated that the printing of the Tk 20 note is almost complete and is expected to be handed over to the central bank next week. The Tk 50 and Tk 1,000 notes are scheduled to be delivered the following week. The timing of their release into the market will be determined by Bangladesh Bank.
He further mentioned that the new notes will first be distributed to the Motijheel office and other branches of Bangladesh Bank, followed by commercial banks. A limited quantity of new notes is expected to be released before the Eid holidays. The official also noted that the volume of new notes being printed is lower compared to the current demand.
