Animal sacrifices in Dhaka drop by half in a year

Animal sacrifices in Dhaka during Eid-ul-Azha this year decreased significantly, with nearly half the number of animals sacrificed compared to last year.

In Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), a total of 632,834 animals were sacrificed, down from 1.2 million in 2024.

In DNCC, 466,080 animals were sacrificed, including 359,677 cows, 1,546 goats, 1,762 buffaloes, and 4,057 sheep. No camels were sacrificed.

In DSCC, 166,754 animals were sacrificed across 75 wards, with 133,317 on Eid day (June 7), 31,745 on June 8, and 1,692 on June 9. Specific breakdowns by animal type for DSCC were unavailable.

DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ajaz noted the decline in sacrifices but highlighted an increase in waste, with 20,889 tonnes collected by Monday afternoon, exceeding the estimated 20,000 tons.

Waste collection will continue, as some residents discard meat waste days later.

DSCC Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia reported that 100 per cent of sacrificial waste was cleared from 75 wards, totalling 31,226 tonnes – surpassing the 30,000-tonne target.

Waste removal from eight temporary animal markets is nearly complete.

The operation involved 12,853 workers, 2,079 vehicles, and 344 pieces of equipment.

Monitoring was conducted via a central control room, market-specific control rooms, and mobile courts, with 400 Ansar VDP members ensuring law and order.
