Govt fixes minimum price of potato
The government has fixed the minimum price of potato at Tk 22 per kg at the cold storage gate.
Besides, the government announced to procure around 50,000 tonnes of potato, a Ministry of Agriculture press release said on Wednesday, August 27.
The farmers are facing losses as the current prices of potato are inconsistent with the production costs and that is why, a four-member review committee has been formed to make recommendations to protect farmers' interest by ensuring fair price for them in line with the instruction of the Chief Adviser, according to the release.
Agriculture secretary has been made its president, while commerce ministry, food ministry and finance division secretaries are members.
After reviewing the committee's suggestions, the government took several decisions, including the fixation of minimum price for potato at Tk 22 a kg at the cold storage gate; procurement of 50,000 tonnes of potato by the government and selling these in October and November months this year; and giving incentives to the potato farmers in the next year.
