Gold prices hit record highs in global, local markets
Gold prices are surging worldwide, breaking records in both international and local markets on Tuesday, January 20.
The price of one ounce of gold in the global market surpassed $4,700 for the first time, fueled by rising demand amid economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and inflation fears.
Experts say investors are increasingly turning to gold as a safe-haven asset. “Concerns over slowdowns in the U.S. and European economies, ongoing regional conflicts, and fluctuations in the dollar are directly affecting the gold market,” a market analyst noted.
The international surge in gold prices has also affected Bangladesh, with the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) announcing new rates effective Tuesday, January 20, setting highest-quality gold at Tk 238,879 per bhori, 21-carat gold at Tk 224,031 (up Tk 4,024), 18-carat gold at Tk 195,430 (up Tk 3,441), and traditional measurement gold at Tk 160,147 (up Tk 2,916).
This marks the highest-ever gold prices in Bangladesh, and experts predict further increases. A BAJUS member said, “With international gold nearing $5,000 per ounce, local prices will continue to rise.”
At around 12:10 PM Bangladesh time on Tuesday, one ounce of gold rose by Tk 4,280, reaching Tk 576,975, continuing a long-term upward trend from Tk 103,912 per ounce in 1980 to Tk 105,771 in 2008, Tk 233,817 in 2011, Tk 366,750 in March 2025, Tk 489,000 in October 2025, and Tk 555,488 by the end of 2025.
In Bangladesh, the price of one bhori of high-quality gold has risen sharply over the years, from Tk 6,900 in 2000 to Tk 42,165 in 2010, Tk 50,000 in 2018, Tk 60,361 in January 2020, Tk 100,000 in July 2023, Tk 150,000 in February 2025, Tk 200,000 in October 2025, and Tk 229,431 by the end of 2025.
In 2025 alone, gold prices in Bangladesh changed 90 times, 63 increases and 27 decreases, resulting in a 64% rise in one year.
The surge in gold prices underscores its continued appeal as a secure investment amid economic volatility worldwide and locally.
