All forms of politics banned in KUET

Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) has banned all forms of political activities on campus.

Students caught engaging in politics will face lifetime expulsion and cancellation of their studentship. Furthermore, the university's syndicate has ruled that teachers, officers, and employees are prohibited from participating in any political organisations.

This decision was finalised during the 93rd syndicate meeting held on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

Prior to this, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, a committee was established to investigate recent clashes between members of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, who were advocating for an end to student politics.

This four-member investigative committee is led by Professor MMA Hashem from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and has been given three working days to submit their findings. The university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam, confirmed these measures.

Syndicate meeting outcomes

The university will take legal action, including filing cases, against non-students involved in the recent incident, students implicated in the clashes will be temporarily expelled, KUET will cover medical costs for the injured students, enhanced security measures will be introduced on campus, and all academic activities will remain suspended until February 28 or students’ safety.

Students begin boycott VC programme

Meanwhile, a group of students held a press conference at approximately 4:15pm, declaring a boycott of the Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

They said they have boycotted the VC and Pro- and they will not vacate the halls of residence

The students expressed concerns over campus security, claiming that KUET is now without guardians. They urged everyone, including the chief adviser, to notice that KUET is suffering from insecurity.

The protesters said they want to return to classrooms vowing that if a news vice-chancellor is appointed tomorrow they will return to classes instantly.

They clarified that while they have boycotted the VC and Pro-VC, these officials are not physically blocked and can leave if they wish.
