At least 37 students of Jagannath University are receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after being injured during a police crackdown involving teargas, sound grenades, and baton charges on Wednesday (May 14).

The incident occurred in the afternoon at Kakrail intersection as students marched towards the residence of the chief advisor as part of their “March towards Jamuna” programme.

The demonstration was organized to press home their three-point demands, which include a 70 per cent housing allowance for students.

During the police action, at least 50 people, including teachers, students, and journalists, were reportedly injured. Around 1:30 PM, 37 injured students were brought to the DMCH emergency department for treatment.

Injured student Omar Farooq told Jago News, “We were peacefully marching towards the chief advisor’s residence as part of our program. Without any provocation, police fired teargas shells, sound grenades, and charged us with batons. Teachers, students, and even journalists were caught in the attack. At least 50 people were injured.”

Md Faruk, Inspector in charge of the DMCH Hospital Police Camp, confirmed the incident to Jago News. “A total of 37 injured students from Jagannath University have been admitted to the emergency department. They are currently undergoing treatment,” he said.
