UNICEF halts education programmes in Bangladesh amid fund crunch

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced on Tuesday that it has been forced to suspend some education programmes in Bangladesh due to a global aid funding crisis.

The decision affects contracts with 1,179 host community personnel supporting kindergarten, Class I, and Class II education, including lessons in English, Science, Social Science, and drawing, according to a UNICEF statement.

The resumption of work for both Rohingya and host community staff at learning facilities after the Eid break, extending until June 29, depends on securing new funding.

“These measures are essential to protect the core functions of our programs, provide emergency support for children in critical need, and uphold our commitment to children’s welfare during these challenging times,” the statement said.

UNICEF expressed hope that increased funding will soon enable the restoration and expansion of these vital services.

The agency, which has supported children in Bangladesh since 1952, emphasised its commitment to ensuring access to quality education, health, and protection for all children, particularly Rohingya refugee children who have faced significant trauma and disruptions.

“Our goal is to equip Rohingya children with essential skills and qualifications, fostering confidence to contribute to their communities when it is safe for them to return,” the statement added.

UNICEF thanked the international community and its partners for their ongoing support and vowed to continue advocating for resources to provide Rohingya children with the education and opportunities they deserve.
